Textual Analysis - Being As An Ocean
Band- Being as an ocean
Song- The hardest part
Genre- melodic hard-core
The camera movements are all hand held this gives a sense that you are there watching the video in person. This gives it a more personal feel and feels like the viewer is involved.
the lighting is very high key. this is because there are two work lights placed at the back of the room. this gives harsh shadows due to the backlight effect. This is very stereotypical for this type of music video genre. the light has a high kelvin temperature this means that it gives out a very warm tone. this can be compensated for by changing the white balance. However the director/camera operator wanted to leave in the warm tones. this goes with the deep meaningful lyrics talking about lost girlfriends.
The mese-en scene is very clever in this video as it is not necessarily very obvious. the first thing is the room that they are in. it looks like a hotel room. This has inter textual links with the lyrics. This is because the song is about splitting up and letting go. So this could mean that he has moved out letting her have the house and he has moved out and is living in a hotel at the moment. Another thing that is very important in the hard-core scene is what bands you listen to and support.Goodwin's conventions of a music video would apply to because the lead singer has a Joyce manner t-shirt. This is emphasised by the use of a prime lens. this is a fixed focal length lens like a 35mm or a 50mm. These lenses have a large aperture of around f1.8. This large aperture creates a really small depth of field. the depth of field is the size of the area that is in focus. So the small depth of field emphasises certain aspects which are in focus putting the rest of the frame out of focus.
Goodwin's conventions of a music video would apply to this also as it emphasises other things like piercings, tattoos and hair styles. This makes the band appear cool to the target audience. This is the desired meaning however in Stuart Hall's Reception theory there is the intended outcome and one that was not desired. for example the desired outcome is that people look at the video and at the lead singer and think yeah he looks cool. However some people may have an opposing view. This will usually be a bad view upon the person. for example some people will watch the same music video and think the singer looks stupid with his tattoos and piercings.
