Media Theories - "The Male gaze"
Laura Mulvey wrote a book "visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" and in it she looked at the way women were represented, this was called "The male gaze theory". In the book she came up with 9 aspects on how the male gaze theory worked.
1. The representation of women as a sexual fantasy and from a heterosexual male point of view.
2. Scopophilia- the pleasure involved in looking at other peoples bodies.
3. Patriarchal society
4. Objectification of women
5. Active male and passive female
6. Men as controlling subjects
7. Women as an image
8. Men do the looking and women are there to be looked at
9. Needs of the male
In the genre however that I am focusing on "the male gaze" theory doesn't apply that often. This I would first of all say the genre is more about the music and the expression of the musicians rather than trying to sell albums.
